1StopBorneo Wildlife, a local ngo, ran a string of interactive workshops at high schools across Sabah recently to increase awareness on the plight of endangered species.

The recent workshops were held at Agaseh Secondary School, Lahad Datu, SMK Tambunan, a Teachers training college in Keningau and Universiti Malaysia Sabah.

During the workshops the students learned fun facts about endangered animals of Sabah through various group activities, slideshows, short films and dramatic performances. They learned the importance of maintaining stable habitats for the animals which are a vital element for a healthy tourism industry in Sabah.

Also stressed was the necessity for these animals to remain in the forest, and that the keeping of them( some of the protected species) is prohibited by law.

The students were asked to relate scenarios in which endangered animals are mistreated and appropriate action should be taken. The students came up with creative mini dramas and demonstrated their acting skills with their newfound knowledge.

The Wildlife group has conducted 74 workshops across Borneo now and plans to conduct 500 in Sabah. Any school teacher can contact the group for free wildlife workshops by emailing 1stopborneo@gmail.com. The have been led by the Head of Education Emmanuel Sydney and Shavez Cheema, Founder of the wildlife group. The team compromises of University Malaysia Sabah Students and TRUMS Club.
